WAYS TO VOLUNTEER AT LBC

Warehouse/Retail Support 

•    The goal of a warehouse/retail volunteer is to facilitate material reuse through the resale of collected materials at our warehouse/store. 

•    Activities include: Unloading materials at the warehouse, incorporation of the material into LBC’s inventory, organizing/cleaning materials, setting up material displays, material pricing, customer service, sales support and loading materials for customers.

•    Requirements for volunteers in this position include: Must be 18 years or older, have the ability to execute construction work/heavy lifting, have the ability to work in unconditioned environments (no heat/air conditioning), have a willingness to work as a team, wear proper clothing/personnel protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, boots, ear plugs, gloves) and have the ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative environment. 

•    As a volunteer you will learn material handling and identification. You will gain construction skills required to execute the work and knowledge of proper safety techniques. You will improve your team building skills and gain experience in customer service. You will also attain a greater understanding of reuse and sustainability.  

 

Deconstruction Support 

•    The goal of deconstruction is to disassemble a structure so that its components can be readily reused or repurposed. Deconstruction is performed before and during the demolition process resulting in a decrease in the amount of usable material that ends up in the landfill and generating economic community and environmental benefits.

•    Activities include: Collection of reusable building materials through the execution of deconstruction and pick-up projects, loading/transport/unloading materials at the warehouse and at job sites, and providing positive customer interactions.

•    Requirements for volunteers in this position include: Must be 18 years or older, have the ability to execute construction work/heavy lifting, have the ability to work in unconditioned environments (no heat/air conditioning), have a willingness to work as a team, wear proper clothing/personnel protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, boots, ear plugs, gloves), have the ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative environment, and have volunteered at least three times at the LBC warehouse as a warehouse/retail support volunteer. 

•    As a volunteer you will learn material handling and identification. You will gain construction skills required to execute the work and knowledge of proper safety techniques. You will improve your team building skills and gain experience in effective deconstruction. You will also attain a greater understanding of reuse and sustainability.  

 

Event Support

•    The goal of event support volunteers is to provide assistance at the events LBC has throughout the year. 

•    Activities for these volunteers vary depending on the event and need for volunteers. General events include:

o    Festivals: Setting up/break down the LBC booth, promoting LBC verbally with attendees and handing out LBC collateral. 

o    Annual Dinner: Setting up/break down, marketing, checking-in attendees and general wayfinding/aid.

o    Open House: Warehouse support, moving items and handing out LBC collateral.

o    Annual Fundraiser: Setting up/break down, marketing, checking in attendees and general wayfinding/aid.

o    DIY’s-skilled volunteers to help attendees build items, support projects, and setting up/breaking down.

•    Requirements for volunteers in this position include: Flexibility, ability to take direction well and must be 18 years or older. Additional requirements may apply depending on the event. 

•    As a volunteer you will learn how to support a team and aid in events. You will have opportunities to be creative and think outside of the box. You will also attain a greater understanding of reuse and sustainability. 

 

Marketing/Fundraising Support 

•    The goal of a marketing/fundraising support volunteer is to aid in the ongoing outreach, increase awareness, and promote LBC in the community.

•    Activities include: Assisting with marketing/retail support, creating/helping manage content for social media outlets, creating promotional materials, promoting LBC activities/announcements with the press, assisting with events, giving facility tours, documentation of material stories, and community outreach. 

•    Requirements for volunteers in this position include: Must be 18 years or older, solid computer skills, strong social skills, creative, and ability to do public presentations. 

•    As a volunteer you will learn marketing tools to boost nonprofit efforts while increasing your business, fundraising, and marketing skills. You will gain experience in effective advertising. You will have opportunities to be creative, and think outside of the box. You will also attain a greater understanding of reuse and sustainability.

•   Where do the proceeds from sales and donations go?

o   All donations and sales go towards serving LBC’s mission. After paying operating costs, our funds are allocated towards our programs.

♣    LBC's Nonprofit Material MATCH Program: Provides free materials to nonprofits, schools, community groups and houses of faith.

♣    LBC's FREE Home Performance Workshops: Learn how to get the most out of your house by improving efficiency, durability and safety in your home. 

♣    LBC's FREE Do-It-Yourself Workshops: Learn hands-on building skills while creating an innovative reuse project. 

♣    Providing local green jobs and intern experience.  

•   Is the warehouse open to the public?

o   Yes. We are open to the general public five days a week. Tuesday-Friday 10:00am-5:00pm and Saturday 10:00am-4:00pm
